The Online Community Life Cycle in Social Media

ShoalHarbor The Online Community Life Cycle
According to the Amy Jo Kim model of online community life cycle, members initially start out as Visitors or lurkers. In this ShoalHarbor post we discuss The Online Community Membership Life Cycle in more detail with reference to Social Media and meaningful community.

The Online Community Life Cycle

After becoming familiar with an online community these visitors then break through their own barriers and become Novices participating in online community life.

These online community novices then become more confident over a sustained period of time and evolve into Regulars. The regulars add huge identity, value and momentum to the community.

Some of the online community regulars may have a personal breakthrough in skills or knowledge or insight, and this along with recognition allows them the identity of a being seen as a Leader. Community leadership becomes an identity of pride.

A leader in an online community advances further over time due to insight, charisma and diligence and eventually is seen as an Elder.
The elders often add wisdom and direction to the online community.

Elders in online community may also be seen as in an Outbound state as the life cycle completes its circle. The elder leaves eventually due to new vision, new relationships, new positions, or new outlook.

This online community life cycle may be seen in many kinds of online communities, and in a certain way this mirrors growth advancement in traditional village or city community life.
